I really needed a break from the huge cetacean poster (Sperm whale wrinkles will make you go crazy) and *BritishViper provided just that for me. This painting is based on a gorgeous painting of hers and as such is also dedicated to her. See Faust's original here:

I had so much fun painting this, it has been some time again since I last did a really free piece. Decided to flip the canvas in the end as I preferred the painting that way. I hope all of you enjoy viewing!

There's not much not to love about this piece. Soft detail fading into the background, a handsome subject, contrast between dark and light....
Both the frigid setting and the water streaming off the whale's fins suggest a lazy forward motion that leaves me, as the viewer, suspended in the air, anticipating the beautiful creature's descent back into the water. Any viewer must be imagining the splash that will result, wondering where the whale will go next.

This piece truly transports me to another world, and I doubt that I'm the only one who's sought to see further, to see underwater, to watch the story unfold.
