I - You shut your mouth! by namu-the-orca I - You shut your mouth! by namu-the-orca
Species depicted: Orca or Killer whale (Orcinus orca)

Tools of the trade: Photoshop CS5

"You shut your mouth, how can you say
'I go about things the wrong way'?!
I am human and I need to be loved,
Just like everybody else does

There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet someone who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own and you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry and you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen 'now'
When exactly do you mean?
See, I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone..."

'How soon is now?' by Love spit love: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoiO0r…

EDIT: did some more work on the background, mainly added lens blurr to make it look a bit more 'realistic'. A success or should I change back?

Personal piece - I'm not interested in questions about the subject, but didn't wanna disable comments either, so don't be afraid to ask something about the painting in itself :)

Feel free to interpret however you like.

Well after all Orcas and other tooth whales are not only the ungulate's answer to primates (like apes in terms of intelligence) but also to carnivorans such as hyenas and wolves (in terms of ecological niches). So the fact the Orca is on the savanna could indicate that not all ungulates are passive grazers like sheep, reminding us that there are more complex than that. And the fact there is a human in the reflection suggests that we should wake up with the idea a "person" might not just be humans on this planet.

Haha, wow, now that's an awesomely different take at it! Not what I had in thought while painting at all, but surely very cool and true :D So interesting to see how different people can interpret the same thing :aww:

The background is nice, though :)
I wouldn't have come to the idea to use a depth of field effect, so that's awesome you thought of it :)

It was mainly used to make the BG look a bit better, though, only in the second place did I think of the 'realism' and DoF effect

Amazing! I especially like the idea of giving the orca 'human' expression, and a very surreal use of desert background too, I can't help but notice that mysterious reflection of the human on the orcas skin!

The whole feel of the piece, as well as your (amazing) song choice makes me think of thoughts of being out of place, unaccepted and laughed at almost. I'd like to know your personal reasons behind this piece :)

I must say my favorite part is the shiny skin. You've really got a good handle on light reflection and refraction.

...Eep. *shuts mouth*

Still, a great expression, and one that is done far more realistically for an orca's face than I have ever managed. :XD:

Haha, that's a job well done from the orca then  Thanks, kinda went out of my comfort zone here 'humanising' her expression, but otherwise she looked way too happy XD

I think the trick to that, with any cetacean, is to keep the expressiveness limited to being seen in the eyes and body posture. But even so, yeah, they can turn cartoonish without warning if one does not pay close attention to how they turn out in the early stages.
